Ames, Iowa: staged reading

In light of the ongoing genocide of Palestinians that began after October 7th, the playwright revived Walls in a staged reading on November 3rd, 2023. KHOI Community Radio hosted the reading in their studio space and recorded the performance for future broadcast.

Ames, Iowa

Context

Because Walls traces the history of Zionism and the state of Israel from the late 1800s until the 2014 Israeli assault on Gaza, it provides vital background to the events that took place on October 7th. In the face of Zionist rhetoric that pretends the October 7th attacks took place in a vacuum, the playwright felt the need to revisit the historical context by bringing Walls back to the stage.

honoring of martyrs

Thanks to the contribution of Chicago-based community organizer Sadia Nawab, thousands of names of the Palestinians who had been killed in the genocide to date were posted in the entryway to the show. This was a powerful and sobering reminder of the ongoing violence Israel perpetrates against Palestinians and a sign of the continued relevance of the play.
